Review by Merri Larsen
Sandi Queen, homeschool mom, author, and founder of Queen Homeschool Supplies, has written
a series of language lesson books following the Charlotte Mason approach. The complete set
includes nine volumes, beginning with young children and moving up to high school.
Language Lessons for Little Ones: Volumes 1, 2 and 3
Focusing on the wonder-filled preschool years, Mrs. Queen has woven many Charlotte Mason
ideals into these well-organized, beautiful volumes. Including picture study, copywork, simple
writing of the alphabet, phonics (in vol. 2 and 3), poetry, stories and creative expression, these
comprehensive volumes will ignite young children’s interest in well-written literature.
Language Lessons for the Very Young: Volumes 1 and 2 ($19.95 each)
Continuing the wonder-filled journey through Charlotte Mason’s ideas of copywork, narration,
picture study, poetry, and grammar (all presented with, as Charlotte might say, a “twaddle-free”
approach), Mrs. Queen has written another set of Charlotte Mason-inspired lessons for the older
preschool/early elementary crowd. Gorgeous full-color fine art prints inspire budding artists and
writers. Written in an engaging way and presenting different topics each day, these lessons will
encourage and nurture children’s interests.
Language Lessons for the Elementary Child: Volumes 1 and 2 ($19.95 each)
Thankfully void of busywork and twaddle (Charlotte Mason’s term for watered-down, inferior
writings), these lessons will provide teachers with more worry-free, work’s-been-done-for-you
language arts instruction. Mrs. Queen wrote these books with the 8 to 12-year-old student in
mind. She recommends beginning with the previous volumes, Language Lessons for the Very
Young, if these volumes seem too difficult. These books contain many gorgeous full-color art
reproductions, letter writing, copywork, poetry, and much more.
Language Lessons for the Secondary Child: Volumes 1 and 2 ($19.95 each)
Written for the junior high through mid-high school years, these volumes continue with
comprehensive language arts instruction on a more advanced level. Famous historical speeches
and more intensive writing assignments combine to make this resource highly recommended.
Teachers with high ideals for the junior high and beginning high school years will not be
disappointed in this well-written set.
Mrs. Queen has beautifully filled a gaping hole in Charlotte Mason-inspired language arts
curricula. Along with many others, I am deeply grateful to her.
Language Lessons for the High School Student ($19.95 each)
With lessons focusing on creative writing and editing, this new book was not yet available at
review time - but if it is anything like the previous volumes in the series, I cannot wait to see it!
